Student Tutors and Their Role
Student tutors play a vital role in the learning process of medical students. Students who have invested years of their life in education are able to gain the most from their education when it comes to clinical and preoperative training. Medical schools all require students to complete a set number of hours with a tutor before they can officially start medical school. These prerequisites are known as "group requirements." Group requirements vary by medical school. However, there are some general rules of student tutoring that should be followed by all student tutors.
Group reviews typically occur in lecture class. In typical 90 minute sessions, these sessions usually meet twice a week for as little as a few weeks to as frequently as seems most efficient. Usually they are conducted by second-year medical student tutors, MSW/MD/PhD. The purpose is to give the students an opportunity to see and speak directly with the instructors. They also benefit from the instructors' expertise. Most importantly, the student tutors get an opportunity to develop and enhance their teaching skills.
During these short seminars, student tutors share important information about teaching, research, and practice. This facilitates better communication between instructors and students. It helps build interpersonal relationships that will impact the instructors' teaching style. It instills greater self-confidence in college students because the instructors gain an opportunity to see firsthand how important good communication is. This allows them to give more personal attention to students.
Live help student tutors present a practical application of the lessons they've just taught. A large part of teaching is how well you can apply what you have learned during lectures. Thus, student tutors in addition to having good educational background and a wide range of skills, are able to contribute to the success of the course.
It is also true that student tutors stated that while teaching can be difficult, there are times when it is very rewarding. For example, when the class is going well. In this situation, the student learners enjoy their time there and are able to retain what they have learned well. On the contrary, when the class is going poorly, it may lead to frustration and the learners feel lost. Thus, in such a situation student tutors must act with responsibility and have to exert some efforts to make sure things get back on track.
